Eleocharis fluctuans, commonly known as Floating Spikerush, is a rare and unusual aquatic stem plant admired for its fine texture and distinctive growth pattern. Unlike the familiar grass-like forms of most Eleocharis species, this plant develops reddish-brown stems with delicate olive-green leaves arranged in fine clusters along each stem.
Originally known as Egleria fluctuans, this speciality species originates from tropical South America, where it occurs in soft, acidic rivers and swamp-like habitats. In nature, its stems may form loose floating masses near the water surface. In the aquarium, however, the stems can be planted into the substrate, where they develop roots and produce an airy, flowing group.
Eleocharis fluctuans is best suited to experienced aquarists with established high-tech planted aquariums. It requires strong lighting, consistent CO₂ injection, soft acidic water, and a reliable supply of nutrients. When its requirements are met, it produces fast, elegant growth that is especially effective in wild nature-style layouts and soft-water aquascapes.

This ADA plant is supplied as an in-vitro tissue culture plant grown under controlled laboratory conditions. Tissue culture plants are supplied free from algae, snails, and unwanted aquatic pests, making them an excellent choice for planted aquariums and sensitive shrimp setups.
Before planting, carefully remove the plant from the tissue culture cup and thoroughly rinse away all nutrient gel using clean aquarium water. Gently separate the plant into small groups or individual stems, taking care not to damage the delicate shoots.
Plant each portion individually into a soft, nutrient-rich aquarium substrate. Space the stems a few centimetres apart so that sufficient light and water circulation can reach the lower growth. Although the plant naturally develops floating stems, planted portions can form roots and grow upwards through the aquarium.
Eleocharis fluctuans requires very soft, acidic water. A carbonate hardness of approximately 0–3°dKH and a pH no higher than approximately 6.5 are strongly recommended. Hard or alkaline water may cause the stems and leaves to darken, stop growing, or gradually deteriorate.
Strong lighting and consistent CO₂ injection are essential for reliable long-term growth. Maintain a steady supply of macronutrients and trace elements while avoiding sudden fluctuations in CO₂, fertilisation, temperature, or water chemistry. An active aquasoil and purified or reverse-osmosis water may be beneficial where local tap water is too hard.
The stems are particularly brittle and should be handled gently during planting and maintenance. To propagate the plant, cut a healthy upper section of the stem and carefully replant it into the substrate. The remaining lower stem may produce new side shoots, gradually creating a fuller and more branched group.
Regular trimming prevents the plant from becoming excessively tangled near the water surface. Remove damaged or blackened growth promptly and ensure neighbouring plants do not shade the lower stems.
Some tissue culture portions may experience temporary yellowing or die-back while adapting to submerged aquarium conditions. Maintain stable, suitable soft-water conditions and leave healthy growing points in place, as new aquarium-adapted growth may emerge once the plant has settled.
Please note: This is a demanding speciality plant recommended for established high-tech aquariums. Its final height, density, colour, and growth form depend strongly on water softness, lighting, CO₂ availability, fertilisation, and overall aquarium stability. As this is a living plant, its size, number of stems, and appearance may vary slightly from the photographs.
