The API Copper (Cu) Test Kit provides a quick and reliable way to measure copper concentrations in aquarium water. Copper is commonly used in certain fish medications, particularly treatments for parasitic infections, but maintaining the correct concentration is essential: too little copper may make treatment ineffective, while excessive levels can be harmful or even fatal to aquatic life.

The kit measures total copper, including both free and chelated copper, across a range of 0–4.0 ppm (mg/L) and is suitable for both freshwater and saltwater aquariums.

Why Test for Copper?

Copper treatments need to remain within the appropriate therapeutic range to work effectively. API notes that free copper levels can decline rapidly and therefore recommends frequent testing—daily when monitoring free copper during treatment.

Important

Copper is highly toxic to many invertebrates and should not be used in aquariums containing shrimp, snails, crayfish or corals. API also advises against using copper treatments in aquariums or ponds containing plants.

For aquariums containing sensitive invertebrates, a copper test can also be a useful diagnostic tool when copper contamination is suspected.

Art of Aqua Tip: When using copper-based medication, never dose by estimation alone. Test the water regularly and follow the medication manufacturer's recommended therapeutic concentration, as different copper medications may require different target levels.
