A natural favourite among shrimp keepers, Betta enthusiasts and blackwater aquarium hobbyists, Alder Cones are a simple but effective way to introduce tannins and authentic botanical character to an aquarium.
These small woody cones are the dried fruiting structures of alder trees, most commonly Alnus glutinosa and Alnus incana. Once submerged, they gradually release tannins and other naturally occurring organic compounds, creating conditions reminiscent of tannin-rich streams, forest pools and other natural freshwater habitats.
As the cones become saturated, they deepen from a dry grey-brown to a rich dark brown and may gradually impart a warm amber or tea-coloured tint to the aquarium water. The intensity will depend on the number of cones used, aquarium volume and frequency of water changes.
Alder Cones are particularly popular in shrimp aquariums and naturalistic setups. Their textured surfaces provide additional areas for biofilm and microorganisms to develop, creating valuable grazing opportunities for shrimp and shrimplets.
In soft, low-KH water, the natural acids released by the cones may also contribute to a gradual reduction in pH. The effect can be considerably less noticeable in harder, well-buffered water.
Recommended Usage:
As a starting point, we recommend approximately 6–8 Alder Cones per 60 litres of aquarium water. There is no fixed dosage, and the quantity can be adjusted according to your water parameters and the desired tannin effect.
Please Note:
Alder Cones are a 100% natural botanical, so variations in size, shape and colour are completely normal. A light biofilm or fungal-looking growth may occasionally develop after submersion. This is a natural part of the breakdown process and is commonly grazed by shrimp and other aquarium inhabitants.
Preparation:
Rinse thoroughly before use. Alder Cones can be added directly to the aquarium or pre-soaked before use. They will gradually become waterlogged and sink naturally.
