DESCRIPTION

Plagiomnium CF Affine (Pearl Moss) (5g portions)

Plagiomnium CF Affine,  commonly identified as Pearl moss., is a distinctive aquatic moss valued for its rounded, pearl-like leaves and soft, lush texture. Unlike finer mosses such as Taxiphyllum species, Pearl Moss has broader leaf structures, giving it a unique, slightly bold appearance while still maintaining a delicate aesthetic in aquascapes.

This moss is widely used to create natural, forest-like details, attaching easily to hardscape such as driftwood and rocks. Its compact growth and vibrant green colour make it suitable for both subtle accents and featured layouts.

Growth Characteristics

  • Type: Moss
  • Height: ±3–10 cm
  • Growth rate: Slow to medium
  • Placement: Foreground, midground, or hardscape attachment
  • Growth habit: Creeping, clumping moss

Pearl Moss spreads gradually by attaching itself to surfaces, forming dense cushions over time when maintained correctly.

Appearance

The defining feature of Pearl Moss is its rounded, slightly translucent leaves, which create a soft, “pearl-like” visual effect.

Compared to finer moss varieties, it has a more structured and layered look, making it ideal for adding texture and depth to aquascapes.

Care Requirements

  • Lighting: Low to medium (higher light encourages denser growth)
  • CO₂: Not required, but improves growth and fullness
  • Substrate: Not required (attaches to hardscape)
  • Water parameters:
    • Temperature: 18–26°C
    • pH: 5.5–7.5

This moss is considered relatively easy to maintain, adapting well to a range of aquarium conditions, although stable parameters promote healthier growth.

Maintenance & Growth Notes

  • Attach using thread, glue, or mesh to hardscape
  • Requires occasional trimming to maintain shape and prevent overgrowth
  • Good water flow helps keep the moss clean and free from debris
  • Slow growth makes it manageable but requires patience for full coverage

Aquascaping Use

  • Ideal for attaching to driftwood and rocks
  • Creates natural, forest or aged hardscape effects
  • Suitable for nature-style, forest-style, and shrimp aquariums

Plant Food / Fertilizer

For best results:

  • Use a complete liquid fertiliser (macro & micro nutrients)
  • Optional CO₂ supplementation for improved growth
  • Maintain clean, stable water conditions
