DESCRIPTION

Hygrophila polysperma ‘Rosanervig’

Hygrophila polysperma ‘Rosanervig’, commonly known as Sunset Hygrophila, is a fast-growing stem plant valued for its distinctive foliage—light green leaves marked with striking white to pink veins. This unique coloration creates strong contrast in planted aquariums, especially under optimal lighting conditions.

This cultivar originates from the widely distributed Hygrophila polysperma, a species native to South and Southeast Asia and well known in aquascaping for its adaptability and rapid growth.

Growth Characteristics

  • Type: Stem plant
  • Height: ±20–40 cm
  • Growth rate: Fast
  • Placement: Midground to background
  • Growth habit: Upright stems with lateral shoots

This plant grows quickly and can be easily propagated by cutting and replanting stems, allowing for dense groupings and bushy growth.

Appearance & Colouration

The defining feature of ‘Rosanervig’ is its pink to white leaf veining, which becomes more pronounced under stronger lighting.

The variegation is associated with reduced chlorophyll in the vein areas, resulting in the pale or pink coloration, while not affecting other plants in the aquarium.

Care Requirements

  • Lighting: Medium to high (strong light enhances colour)
  • CO₂: Not required, but improves growth and coloration
  • Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate recommended
  • Water parameters:
    • Temperature: 22–28°C
    • pH: Neutral to slightly acidic

This species is considered undemanding and highly adaptable, tolerating a wide range of water conditions, making it suitable for both beginners and advanced aquascapes.

Maintenance & Growth Notes

  • Requires regular trimming due to its fast growth
  • Cuttings can be replanted for easy propagation
  • Occasional fully green shoots may appear and can be removed to maintain the characteristic variegation
  • Effective at absorbing excess nutrients, making it useful in newly established aquariums

Tissue Culture Advantage

This plant is supplied in sterile tissue culture, ensuring it is free from algae, pests, and contaminants. Tissue culture plants are grown in a nutrient-rich medium, allowing for clean and healthy introduction into any aquascape.

Aquascaping Use

  • Ideal for background or midground planting
  • Provides colour contrast with green plants
  • Suitable for nature-style, Dutch, and mixed planted layouts

Plant Food / Fertilizer

For optimal results:

  • Use a complete liquid fertiliser (macro & micro nutrients)
  • Supplement with iron to enhance colour intensity
  • Maintain consistent nutrient dosing and stable conditions

Please note: Images are for display purposes only. As plants are natural products, variations in size, shape, and color will occur.
