Dionaea muscipula ‘Shark’s Teeth’ is a distinctive Venus Flytrap cultivar prized for its unusual, aggressive-looking traps. Unlike the long, fine “teeth” found on a typical Venus Flytrap, ‘Shark’s Teeth’ develops short, triangular and jagged teeth along the edges of each trap, creating an appearance reminiscent of a shark’s jaw.
The traps are predominantly fresh green, while the inner surfaces can develop attractive red to reddish-pink colouration under strong light. The combination of contrasting colour and unusual serrated teeth makes this an excellent choice for collectors looking for something different from the standard Venus Flytrap.
Like other Dionaea, ‘Shark’s Teeth’ is a temperate carnivorous plant and requires plenty of strong light, very pure water and a nutrient-poor growing medium. It also undergoes a natural winter dormancy, during which growth slows and the plant may produce smaller, lower-growing traps.
Light: Very bright light to full sun. Strong light encourages compact growth and better trap colouration.
Water: Use RO, RODI, distilled or rainwater only. Avoid normal tap water where mineral levels are high.
Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently moist. The tray method works particularly well during active growth.
Growing Medium: Nutrient-poor carnivorous plant substrate such as sphagnum peat with perlite or suitable sphagnum moss. Do not use normal potting soil or fertilised substrates.
Feeding: The plant will catch small insects naturally. Feeding is not essential when grown outdoors or where insects are available.
Fertiliser: Do not use conventional plant fertilisers on the roots.
Dormancy: Requires a cooler winter rest period. Smaller or dying traps during dormancy are part of the plant’s natural growth cycle.
Difficulty: Intermediate
Growth Habit: Compact rosette-forming carnivorous plant
Special Feature: Distinctive short, triangular “shark-like” teeth
‘Shark’s Teeth’ takes the already fascinating Venus Flytrap and gives it an even more dramatic appearance. Its short, jagged teeth and colourful traps make every open trap look like a miniature set of jaws — a fantastic specimen for a carnivorous plant collection.
Please note: Colour, trap size and growth habit can vary according to season, maturity and growing conditions. During winter dormancy, Dionaea naturally produces smaller growth and may temporarily die back.
