Microsorum pteropus 'Grand Leaf', commonly known as Broad Leaf Java Fern, is an elegant, hardy aquarium plant prized for its broad, lush green leaves that create a natural, mature appearance in any aquascape. Its larger foliage makes it an excellent choice for adding texture and depth to midground and background layouts.
Like all Java Ferns, this is an epiphytic plant and should be attached to driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape rather than planted directly into the substrate. The rhizome must remain exposed to prevent rotting. Over time, the plant develops an extensive root system that securely anchors itself to the hardscape.
One of the easiest aquatic plants to care for, Microsorum pteropus 'Grand Leaf' thrives in low to medium lighting and does not require CO₂ injection, making it suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. While additional CO₂ and regular fertilisation will encourage fuller growth, the plant performs exceptionally well in low-tech aquariums.
Its broad leaves also provide excellent shelter for shrimp, fry, and small fish while adding a timeless, natural aesthetic to planted aquariums.
