Introduction:
Bucephalandra motleyana is a unique and highly sought-after aquatic plant admired for its rich green to bluish tones and subtle iridescent sheen. Native to the fast-flowing streams and riverbanks of Borneo, this hardy epiphytic species is well-suited to a wide range of aquascaping styles. Its slightly elongated, textured leaves and compact growth habit make it perfect for attaching to driftwood and rocks, adding depth and natural character to both nano and large aquariums.
Care Requirements:
Water Parameters: Prefers temperatures between 22–28°C, with an optimal pH range of 5.5–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water (dH up to 12). Stable conditions are key to preventing melt.
Nutrient Requirements: Benefits from regular liquid fertilization, particularly micronutrients and iron, to maintain healthy growth and enhance leaf coloration. CO₂ supplementation is optional but will promote faster growth and more vibrant tones.
Tank Setup: Best grown attached to hardscape such as driftwood or rocks. It should never be buried in substrate, as the rhizome can rot. Performs well under low to moderate lighting, making it suitable for low-tech setups.
Care Tips:
Maintain consistent water parameters and avoid sudden changes to prevent plant stress. Provide gentle water movement to keep leaves clean and free from debris. Avoid excessive lighting, as this may encourage algae growth on the slow-growing leaves. Trim older or damaged leaves occasionally to stimulate new growth and maintain a tidy appearance.
Bucephalandra motleyana is an excellent choice for aquascapers seeking a low-maintenance yet visually striking plant. Its durability, subtle coloration, and versatility make it a beautiful addition to any freshwater aquarium.
