Lighting: Medium to high lighting is recommended. Good lighting encourages compact growth and helps maintain healthy, dense growing tips.
CO₂: Stable CO₂ supplementation is highly recommended. Fluctuating or insufficient CO₂ can result in weak or deteriorating growth.
Water Parameters: Tonina fluviatilis strongly prefers soft, acidic water with a low KH. A pH of approximately 4.5–6.5 is ideal. Hard, alkaline water is generally unsuitable for achieving its best growth.
Nutrition: Consistent water-column fertilisation with a balanced supply of macro- and micronutrients is important for maintaining healthy, vibrant growth.
Substrate: A quality nutrient-rich aquasoil is highly recommended. Aquasoils are particularly useful for Tonina as they can help maintain the softer, more acidic conditions preferred by the plant.
Trimming: Tall stems can be trimmed and the healthy tops replanted. Side shoots can also be removed and replanted to gradually develop a larger, denser group.
Planting Tips:
Separate individual stems and plant them carefully into the substrate, leaving a small amount of space between each plant.
Plant several stems together to create a defined group while allowing sufficient light and water circulation around each growing tip.
Position Tonina fluviatilis in the midground or background where its distinctive shape can be clearly appreciated.
Avoid placing it beneath large or fast-growing plants that may shade the growing tips.
For the best long-term results, combine a quality aquasoil with soft water, stable CO₂ and consistent fertilisation.
When stems become too tall, trim the healthiest top sections and replant them. This helps maintain a fresh, compact group.
Its bright green foliage is particularly effective when planted alongside red or orange species such as colourful Rotala varieties.
With its star-shaped growing tips, vibrant green colour and distinctive fine texture, Tonina fluviatilis is an exceptional choice for specialised planted aquariums. It is more demanding than many conventional stem plants, but aquarists able to provide soft, acidic water, stable CO₂ and good lighting are rewarded with a truly distinctive feature plant.
