DESCRIPTION

Atyopsis spinipes (Bamboo Shrimp)

The Bamboo Shrimp (Atyopsis spinipes) is one of the most fascinating freshwater shrimp available to aquarists. Unlike most shrimp that graze on algae or scavenge for food, Bamboo Shrimp are filter feeders, using their beautiful fan-shaped front legs to catch tiny food particles carried by the current.

These peaceful shrimp spend much of their time perched on rocks, driftwood or plant leaves in areas of moderate to strong water flow, patiently filtering microscopic food from the water. Their unique feeding behaviour makes them a captivating addition to well-established community aquariums.

Bamboo Shrimp are completely peaceful and can be kept with other shrimp, snails and small community fish. They thrive in mature aquariums where a constant supply of suspended microorganisms is available. In newer or very clean aquariums, they may require supplemental feeding with powdered shrimp foods, finely crushed flakes or other foods designed for filter feeders.

Their colour can vary from reddish-brown and tan to greenish or beige, often changing depending on their environment and mood. This natural camouflage makes each individual unique.

Quick Facts

  • Common Name: Bamboo Shrimp
  • Scientific Name: Atyopsis spinipes
  • Adult Size: 6–10 cm
  • Temperament: Peaceful
  • Difficulty: Moderate

Interesting Fact: Bamboo Shrimp never use their fan-like hands to grab food from the substrate. Instead, they hold them open in the current like tiny nets, catching microscopic food particles drifting through the water. When the fans are full, they carefully clean each one before returning it to the current.

The Bamboo Shrimp is a truly unique freshwater invertebrate that combines peaceful behaviour with fascinating natural feeding habits, making it a standout addition to any mature planted or community aquarium.
