Hedyotis salzmannii, botanically accepted as Oldenlandia salzmannii, is a delicate aquatic stem plant valued for its fresh green colour, compact leaves, and softly creeping growth habit. Its small rounded to oval leaves develop along slender stems, creating a refined texture that works especially well in detailed planted aquariums.
This versatile species can be maintained as a compact midground bush or allowed to grow upwards into the background. Regular trimming encourages the stems to branch, gradually producing a fuller and denser group. Its bright green foliage provides attractive contrast alongside red plants, darker Cryptocoryne varieties, and bold aquarium hardscape.
Hedyotis salzmannii is relatively easy to cultivate and grows quickly once established. It performs well under medium lighting and can survive without injected CO₂, although consistent CO₂ supplementation, balanced fertilisation, and stronger lighting encourage denser growth, shorter internodes, and healthier foliage.

This ADA plant is supplied as an in-vitro tissue culture plant grown under controlled laboratory conditions. Tissue culture plants are supplied free from algae, snails, and unwanted aquatic pests, making them an excellent choice for planted aquariums and sensitive shrimp setups.
Before planting, carefully remove the plant from the tissue culture cup and thoroughly rinse away all nutrient gel using clean aquarium water. Gently divide the plant into several small portions or individual stems, taking care not to damage the fine roots and young growing tips.
Plant each portion individually into the aquarium substrate, leaving approximately 2–3 cm between stems. This spacing allows sufficient light and water circulation to reach the lower leaves while giving the stems room to branch and develop into a fuller group.
Hedyotis salzmannii absorbs nutrients through both its roots and leaves. A nutrient-rich substrate supports establishment, while regular liquid fertilisation encourages steady growth and healthy green foliage. CO₂ injection is not essential, but it can promote denser branching, shorter internodes, and faster recovery after trimming.
Medium to high lighting helps maintain compact growth. Under weaker lighting, the stems may become longer and more widely spaced as they grow towards the surface. Avoid placing the plant beneath taller species that may shade its lower leaves.
Trim healthy stems above a leaf node to encourage new side shoots and maintain a compact, bushy shape. Replant the healthiest upper cuttings into open spaces to expand the group. Regular trimming also helps prevent the upper growth from shading and weakening the lower stems.
Some tissue culture portions may experience temporary yellowing, leaf loss, or changes in leaf shape while adapting to submerged aquarium conditions. This is a normal acclimation response. Maintain stable water parameters and leave healthy roots and growing points in place, as new underwater growth should emerge once the plant becomes established.
Please note: This species is sometimes confused in the aquarium trade with compact forms of Bacopa monnieri. This product is offered under the ADA identification Hedyotis salzmannii. Final height, leaf size, density, and growth pattern depend on lighting, CO₂ availability, nutrients, trimming frequency, and aquarium conditions. As this is a living plant, its number of stems, colour, size, and overall appearance may vary slightly from the photographs.
