Ammannia gracilis is a striking stem plant prized for its beautiful reddish to bronze foliage and upright growth. Under good aquarium conditions, the leaves can develop rich red and burgundy tones, making it an excellent choice for adding colour and contrast to a planted aquarium.
This relatively fast-growing stem plant performs best with good lighting, CO₂ injection and a nutrient-rich environment. Its colour intensity is strongly influenced by light and available nutrients, with stronger light generally encouraging deeper red tones.
Ammannia gracilis is particularly effective when planted in groups, creating a dense, colourful background or midground. Regular trimming encourages branching and allows you to shape the plant into a fuller, more compact group.
Difficulty: Moderate to Advanced
Growth: Fast
Colour: Green, bronze to red
Placement: Midground to background
Lighting: Medium to High

Aquascaping tip: Plant individual stems with a little space between them rather than planting one dense bunch. This allows light to reach the lower leaves and encourages healthy, bushier growth.
