The API Water Softener Pillow is a specialised chemical filtration media designed to reduce general hardness (GH) in freshwater aquariums. It works by lowering levels of calcium and magnesium in the water, making it particularly useful where tap water is harder than the conditions preferred by your aquarium inhabitants.

The pillow also helps remove heavy metals and can reduce the white, crusty mineral deposits commonly seen on aquarium glass, equipment and other surfaces in areas with hard water.

Simply rinse the pouch and place it in an area of good water flow inside your aquarium filter. Unlike disposable filter media, the API Water Softener Pillow can be recharged using aquarium salt and reused, making it a convenient option for managing water hardness.

Directions for Use

Test your aquarium water to determine the current GH before use.

1. Rinse the pillow under tap water.
2. Place it inside the filter where water can flow freely through the pouch.
3. Allow it to operate for 48 hours.
4. After 48 hours, remove and recharge before further use.

How to Recharge

Dissolve 3 tablespoons of API Aquarium Salt in approximately 207 ml (7 fl oz) of tap water.

Rinse the pillow under tap water and soak it in the salt solution for 2 hours. It can then be returned directly to the filter without rinsing.

When not in use, keep the pillow submerged in the recharging solution and do not allow it to dry out.

API states that the Water Softener Pillow can generally be recharged and reused up to four times before replacement is required.

Art of Aqua Tip

Don't soften aquarium water simply because your GH reading appears high. Different fish, shrimp and plants have different mineral requirements. Always test your water and determine the appropriate GH for the livestock you are keeping before making adjustments.

For best results, make changes gradually and monitor your water parameters during use.
