Lobelia cardinalis ‘Small Form’ is a compact and highly attractive form of the well-known Cardinal Plant, prized in aquascaping for its neat growth habit, fresh green foliage and versatility in the foreground and midground.

Compared with the standard form of Lobelia cardinalis, the ‘Small Form’ develops smaller leaves, shorter internodes and a more compact appearance, making it particularly useful in carefully structured aquascapes. With regular trimming, it can be maintained as a dense, low-growing group or even shaped into a beautifully defined “bush”.

Its rounded to oval leaves provide an excellent textural contrast against fine-leaved stem plants and carpeting species, while its bright green colour works particularly well alongside red plants, wood and darker hardscape.

Key Features:

  • Compact Growth Habit: The ‘Small Form’ remains considerably more compact than standard Lobelia cardinalis, making it particularly valuable for aquascaping.

  • Attractive Fresh-Green Foliage: Its small, rounded leaves create a clean and vibrant appearance that works well in both Nature Aquarium and more structured layouts.

  • Excellent Midground Plant: Its controlled height makes it ideal for creating transitions between low foreground plants and taller background species.

  • Responds Well to Trimming: Regular pruning encourages side shoots and allows the plant to develop into a dense, bushy group.

  • Excellent Contrast Plant: The broader, rounded leaves contrast beautifully with fine-leaved plants such as Rotala, Limnophila and carpeting species.

Care Requirements:

  • Lighting: Medium lighting is sufficient for healthy growth, while stronger lighting encourages denser, more compact development.

  • CO₂: Although Lobelia cardinalis ‘Small Form’ can grow without additional CO₂, supplementation is recommended for stronger, more compact growth and an overall healthier appearance.

  • Water Parameters: This adaptable plant performs well in a range of aquarium conditions, with temperatures of approximately 20–28°C and a pH between 6.0 and 7.5.

  • Nutrition: A nutrient-rich substrate together with balanced water-column fertilisation will support healthy growth and strong green foliage.

  • Trimming: Regular trimming is recommended if a compact group is desired. Cutting the taller shoots encourages branching and helps maintain a dense, structured appearance.

Planting Tips:

  • Plant individual stems with a small amount of space between them rather than placing the entire bunch together. This allows light to reach the lower leaves and encourages each stem to establish properly.

  • For a natural aquascaping effect, arrange the plants in a group with slightly varying heights rather than creating a perfectly straight row.

  • Regular trimming can be used to create a low, dense midground “bush”, making this plant particularly effective in structured aquascapes.

  • Healthy trimmed tops can be replanted to expand the group or replace older stems.

  • In larger aquariums, use Lobelia cardinalis ‘Small Form’ as a foreground-to-midground transition plant. In smaller aquariums, it can become an attractive feature plant in its own right.

  • Pair it with fine-leaved or red plants to emphasise the distinctive shape and fresh green colour of its foliage.

Lobelia cardinalis ‘Small Form’ is an excellent choice for aquascapers looking for a compact, manageable broad-leaved plant that can be shaped and maintained with precision. Its smaller size and neat growth habit make it considerably more versatile for aquascaping than the standard form of Lobelia cardinalis.
