Rotala sp. ‘BSD’ is an attractive stem plant prized for its fine foliage and beautiful colouration. Under good aquarium conditions, the plant can develop striking shades ranging from green and orange to pink and rich reddish tones, creating an eye-catching feature in a planted aquarium.

Its relatively narrow leaves and upright growth give Rotala BSD an elegant, delicate appearance. When planted in groups and regularly trimmed, it develops into a dense, colourful bush that works particularly well in the midground or background of an aquascape.

Like many colourful Rotala varieties, its final appearance is strongly influenced by lighting, CO₂, nutrition and growing conditions. In a well-maintained high-tech aquarium, its colouration can become considerably more intense.

• Water Parameters: Rotala BSD performs well in temperatures of approximately 22–28°C and generally prefers slightly acidic to neutral water.

• Nutrition: Consistent macro- and micronutrient availability is important for healthy growth. Balanced fertilisation will help the plant maintain strong growth and attractive colouration.

• Trimming: Regular trimming encourages branching and prevents the stems from becoming excessively tall or shading the lower portions of the group. Healthy trimmed tops can be replanted.

Planting Tips:

• Separate the stems and plant them individually with a small amount of space between each stem. This allows light and water circulation to reach the lower foliage.

• Plant several stems together to create a fuller group and achieve the best visual impact.

• Position Rotala BSD in the midground or background depending on the size and depth of the aquarium.

• Once the stems reach the desired height, trim the tops to encourage side shoots and create a denser, bushier appearance.

• Healthy trimmed tops can be replanted into the substrate to expand or rejuvenate the group.

• For the strongest colouration, combine good-quality lighting with stable CO₂ and balanced fertilisation rather than relying on a single nutrient to intensify red tones.
