Black Lava Rock is a naturally porous volcanic stone with deep charcoal-to-black colouring and a highly textured surface, making it one of the most versatile hardscape materials for aquariums, paludariums and terrariums.
Black Lava Rock features predominantly dark charcoal, black and subtle earthy-brown tones, combined with the distinctive pits, cavities and irregular texture created during its volcanic formation.
When dry, the stone has a softer, more muted charcoal appearance. Once wet, the colour becomes deeper and richer, while the countless pores and surface details become even more pronounced.
Its rugged texture gives Black Lava Rock plenty of character while still allowing it to blend naturally into a planted layout.
Black Lava Rock is exceptionally versatile. Larger pieces can be used to create rock formations, slopes, islands and structural foundations, while the smaller grades are excellent for continuing the formation naturally into the surrounding substrate.
Its porous, textured surface is also particularly useful for attaching mosses and epiphytic plants, allowing the hardscape to become increasingly integrated into the planted environment as the aquascape matures.
Because the different sizes can be used together, it is easy to create natural transitions rather than having large stones appear isolated within the layout.
Black Lava Rock provides beautiful contrast against bright green plants, mosses, Bucephalandra, Anubias and ferns.
Pair it with lighter sand for a dramatic contrast, or combine it with dark substrate and natural wood for a deeper, more atmospheric nature-style aquascape.
10–30 cm — Larger pieces ideal for feature stones, structural hardscape and substantial rock formations.
3–8 cm — Medium pieces ideal for supporting larger formations, filling transitions and adding natural detail.
1–2 cm — Small lava rock ideal for detailing, filling gaps and creating natural transitions between larger hardscape and substrate.
