Black Mountain Seiryu Stone is a dramatic aquascaping stone known for its rugged, craggy texture, deep grey colouring and contrasting natural veins. Its strong shapes and exceptional detail make it particularly suited to Iwagumi and mountain-inspired aquascapes.
When dry, Black Mountain Seiryu displays predominantly dark grey to charcoal tones, often with lighter grey or whitish veins running through the stone.
Once wet, the darker tones become significantly deeper and richer, sometimes taking on an almost blue-black appearance. At the same time, the contrasting veins, crevices and intricate surface textures become more pronounced.
Each piece has its own combination of peaks, fractures, ridges and veins, providing plenty of character when selecting stones for a layout.
Black Mountain Seiryu is an exceptional choice for Iwagumi-style aquascapes, where carefully selected stones become the dominant structural elements of the layout.
Its naturally angular shapes and strong directional lines make it easier to establish a prominent main stone (Oyaishi) and complement it with smaller supporting stones to create balance, movement and visual flow.
Beyond Iwagumi, it is equally effective for mountain ranges, rocky slopes, cliffs, valleys and other nature-inspired aquascapes. Partially burying the base of the stones in substrate can help create the impression that the formation continues naturally beneath the landscape.
For a classic Iwagumi appearance, pair Black Mountain Seiryu with carpeting plants and a clean, open substrate layout, allowing the stone formation to remain the focal point.
It also contrasts beautifully with bright green aquatic plants and can be combined with mosses and other planting where a more mature, nature-style appearance is desired.
Seiryu Stone may increase water hardness and can raise pH, particularly in softer or more acidic water. This should be considered when keeping livestock or plants requiring very soft water conditions.
