Brochis splendens, commonly known as the Emerald Green Corydoras or Emerald Brochis, is a beautifully coloured South American catfish prized for its rich green sheen and peaceful nature. Despite its common name, it is now classified in the genus Brochis rather than Corydoras.
Its body displays an attractive metallic emerald to green-bronze colour, which can become particularly striking under good aquarium lighting. The tall dorsal fin and streamlined body give this species a distinctive appearance compared with many of the smaller Corydoras.
Like other members of the Corydoradinae family, Brochis splendens is a peaceful, social bottom-dweller that spends much of its time exploring the substrate with its sensitive barbels, searching for small pieces of food. It is most comfortable when kept in a group of its own kind, where its natural social behaviour can be observed.
A fine sand or smooth substrate is recommended to protect their delicate barbels, along with plenty of open areas for foraging. They are excellent inhabitants for planted community aquariums and generally ignore other peaceful fish.
Brochis splendens is an omnivore and readily accepts quality sinking pellets, wafers, frozen foods and other suitable aquarium foods. Although they are excellent scavengers, they should still be deliberately fed to ensure they receive adequate nutrition.
