Dennerle Microsorum pteropus – Potted Plant (Java Fern)
Microsorum pteropus, widely known as Java Fern, is one of the most popular and reliable aquarium plants in the world. Native to Southeast Asia, this adaptable fern thrives along riverbanks and in tropical streams, where it grows attached to rocks and wood.
Highly variable in appearance, Java Fern displays a range of leaf shapes and sizes, from narrow and elongated to broader, textured forms. Its deep green foliage adds natural structure and calm contrast to aquascapes, making it ideal for background placement or as a feature attached to hardscape.
A completely undemanding plant, it is perfect for beginners and low-tech aquariums. Java Fern grows best when its rhizome is not buried in the substrate but instead anchored to rocks or driftwood using thread or fishing line. It tolerates low to moderate lighting but also performs well under stronger light conditions.
Older leaves often develop small daughter plants, which can be carefully removed and reattached elsewhere in the aquarium — making propagation simple and rewarding.
