DESCRIPTION

Introduction:

Helanthium bolivianum 'Quadricostatus', often referred to in the hobby as Pygmy Chain Sword or by its former classification Echinodorus quadricostatus, is a fast-growing, low-profile rosette plant ideal for foreground or midground placement. Native to South America, this species is known for its bright green, sword-shaped leaves and its ability to spread quickly via runners, forming a vibrant, grass-like carpet in well-lit tanks. This in vitro version provides a clean, pest-free start, making it a great choice for aquascapers who want healthy, strong initial growth in planted or shrimp-friendly setups.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:
    Temperature: 20–28°C
    pH Range: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2–12°dH)

  • Nutrient Requirements:
Thrives in nutrient-rich substrate; root tabs are especially helpful for long-term vigor. Liquid fertilizers support vibrant leaf color and healthy runner development. CO₂ is optional but beneficial for denser, faster carpeting.

  • Tank Setup:
    Minimum Tank Size: 20 litres
Substrate: Fine to medium grain, nutrient-rich soil or sand
Decorations: Best planted directly into substrate for root spreading
Lighting: Medium to high—stronger light promotes compact growth and faster propagation
CO₂: Optional but improves growth and appearance

Care Tips:

Rinse off in vitro gel before planting. Break the culture into small rosettes and plant them individually with spacing to allow natural runner propagation. Prune larger or older leaves to keep the carpet low and fresh. Maintain clean water and stable conditions to avoid leaf yellowing or melting.

With its quick-spreading growth, bright coloration, and ease of maintenance, Helanthium bolivianum 'Quadricostatus' is a fantastic option for aquarists wanting a soft, natural-looking foreground cover. Its adaptability and minimal demands make it suitable for both beginner and advanced aquascapers.
