Natural colour variation with two textures for beautifully detailed aquascapes.
Dutch Sand & Gravel is a naturally styled decorative aquarium substrate featuring a varied blend of warm beige, cream, tan, soft brown, muted pink, grey and subtle rust-coloured stones.
Rather than presenting as one uniform colour, every handful contains subtle variations in tone, shape and texture. This creates the beautifully irregular appearance associated with natural riverbeds and makes Dutch Sand & Gravel particularly effective in nature-style aquascaping.
Available in two grain sizes — 1–3 mm and 3–5 mm — each grade can be used independently or the two can be combined to create more natural transitions and additional depth.
1–3 mm – Fine Gravel
The finer of the two grades creates a detailed but relatively refined substrate. Ideal for foreground areas, pathways, smaller aquariums and transitions between sand, hardscape and planting.
3–5 mm – Medium Gravel
Larger individual stones make the natural colour and texture considerably more visible. Excellent for riverbeds, around rocks and driftwood, along banks and wherever a stronger, more rugged texture is required.
This is where I think you can really sell the aquascaping potential of the product.
Natural riverbeds rarely consist of perfectly uniform particles. Combining the 1–3 mm and 3–5 mm grades allows the aquascaper to vary the scale of the substrate across the layout.
Use the finer 1–3 mm material through broader areas and transitions, then introduce the 3–5 mm selectively around stone, wood and the edges of pathways. The change in particle size adds another layer of detail without introducing a different colour palette.

Dutch Sand & Gravel has enough colour variation to be interesting up close, yet from a distance the different shades blend into a warm, balanced and very natural-looking substrate.
The combination of beige, cream, brown, grey and muted warmer tones also makes it extremely versatile. It pairs beautifully with both dark and lighter stone, natural driftwood and green planting without overpowering the aquascape.
Most importantly, having two matching grain sizes gives the aquascaper more control over scale, texture and transitions within the finished layout.
Preparation:
Rinse thoroughly before use to remove dust and loose particles.
