Synodontis petricola, commonly known as the Dwarf Lake Synodontis, is a small and beautifully marked catfish from Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. It is one of the more compact Synodontis species, making it a fantastic choice for aquarists who love the character of Synodontis catfish but don't have space for the larger species.
Its attractive dark brown to black body is covered with contrasting pale spots, giving it a striking appearance. Like other Synodontis, it has characteristic barbels around the mouth which it uses to explore its surroundings and locate food.
Despite its somewhat unusual appearance, S. petricola is generally peaceful and active, particularly when kept in a small group. They spend much of their time exploring rocks, caves and other structures in the aquarium, becoming especially active around feeding time. Providing plenty of rockwork, caves and shaded hiding places will help them feel secure and encourage their natural behaviour.
This species is best kept in a mature aquarium with stable water parameters, preferably with good water movement and well-oxygenated water. As a Lake Tanganyika species, it appreciates hard, alkaline water. A sandy or fine-grained substrate is ideal, as they frequently forage along the bottom.
Synodontis petricola is an omnivorous opportunistic feeder and readily accepts quality sinking pellets and granules, frozen foods and other suitable aquarium foods. Feed after lights-out or during the evening to observe their natural feeding behaviour.
