Limnophila sessiliflora, commonly known as Ambulia, is a beautiful and fast-growing stem plant admired for its finely divided, feather-like foliage and fresh light-green colour. Its soft, delicate leaves form dense whorls around each upright stem, creating a lush appearance that adds movement and fine texture to planted aquariums.
This adaptable Asian species is an excellent alternative to more demanding Cabomba varieties, as it can grow successfully under lower lighting and without mandatory CO₂ injection. When planted in groups, the closely spaced stems develop into a full, attractive background display that provides excellent contrast alongside broad-leaved plants, rocks, and driftwood.
Limnophila sessiliflora grows quickly and is especially useful in newly established aquariums, where its rapid nutrient uptake can help support a balanced planted environment. Regular trimming encourages side shoots and dense branching, allowing the plant to be shaped into a compact bush or maintained as a tall, flowing background group.

This Horizon plant is supplied as an in-vitro tissue culture plant grown under controlled laboratory conditions. Tissue culture plants are supplied free from algae, snails, parasites, and unwanted aquatic pests, making them an excellent choice for planted aquariums and sensitive shrimp setups.
Before planting, carefully remove the plant from the tissue culture cup and thoroughly rinse away all nutrient gel using clean aquarium water. Gently separate the plant into several small groups or individual stems, taking care not to damage the delicate foliage and growing tips.
Plant each portion individually into the aquarium substrate, leaving approximately 2–3 cm between stems. This spacing allows light and water circulation to reach the lower foliage while providing enough room for the plants to branch and develop into a dense group.
Limnophila sessiliflora absorbs nutrients primarily through its leaves and stems, making regular liquid fertilisation particularly beneficial. A nutrient-rich substrate can support root development, but the plant also grows successfully in gravel or sand when sufficient nutrients are available in the water column.
Low to medium lighting is sufficient for healthy growth. Under weaker lighting, the stems may become taller and more widely spaced as they grow towards the surface. Medium lighting encourages denser leaf growth, while strong lighting may cause the upper shoots to develop subtle rusty-brown or reddish tones.
CO₂ injection is not essential, but it can encourage faster establishment, shorter internodes, and fuller growth. Stable CO₂ and nutrient levels are especially helpful when maintaining the plant as a compact, carefully shaped group.
Trim the stems above a healthy leaf node to encourage side shoots and maintain a bushy appearance. The healthy upper cuttings can be replanted into open areas, while older lower sections can be removed when they become sparse. Regular trimming prevents the upper growth from shading and weakening the leaves below.
Some tissue culture portions may experience temporary yellowing or leaf loss while adapting to submerged aquarium conditions. Maintain stable water parameters and leave healthy stems, roots, and growing points in place, as new underwater foliage should develop once the plant has established.
