DESCRIPTION

Rotala macrandra (Tissue Culture)

Rotala macrandra is a highly sought-after stem plant, known for its intense red to pink coloration and delicate, broad leaves. Native to India, this species is widely regarded as one of the most vibrant red plants used in aquascaping, making it a standout feature in high-end planted aquariums.

Due to its demanding nature, Rotala macrandra is best suited for high-tech aquariums, where strong lighting, stable CO₂ injection, and consistent nutrient supply allow it to develop its full colour potential.

Growth Characteristics

  • Type: Stem plant
  • Height: ±20–50 cm
  • Growth rate: Medium
  • Placement: Midground to background
  • Growth habit: Upright stems with closely spaced leaves

Under optimal conditions, the plant develops dense, bushy growth and can be shaped through regular trimming. Propagation is simple by cutting and replanting healthy stems.

Appearance & Colouration

The defining feature of Rotala macrandra is its rich red to deep pink leaves, which intensify under high light and proper nutrient balance.

Leaf shape is broader and softer compared to other Rotala species, giving it a more dramatic and textured appearance in aquascapes. Insufficient light or nutrients may result in duller colours or weaker growth.

Care Requirements (High Tech Recommended)

  • Lighting: High (essential for strong red coloration)
  • CO₂: Required for healthy growth and stability
  • Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate recommended
  • Water parameters:
    • Temperature: 22–28°C
    • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral

This species is considered sensitive to fluctuations, particularly in CO₂ and nutrient levels, and requires stable conditions to thrive.

Maintenance & Growth Notes

  • Requires frequent trimming to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth
  • Sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters
  • Best growth occurs in soft to moderately hard water
  • Nutrient deficiencies (especially iron) may affect colour intensity

Tissue Culture Advantage

This plant is supplied in sterile tissue culture, ensuring it is free from algae, pests, and contaminants. Tissue culture plants are cultivated in a nutrient-rich medium, allowing for a clean and healthy start in the aquarium.

Aquascaping Use

  • Ideal for midground to background focal points
  • Creates strong colour contrast in planted aquariums
  • Suitable for nature aquariums, Dutch-style layouts, and high-end aquascapes

Plant Food / Fertilizer

For best results:

  • Use a complete liquid fertiliser (macro & micro nutrients)
  • Maintain consistent iron supplementation for colour development
  • Ensure stable CO₂ levels and regular dosing schedule

Please note: Images are for display purposes only. As plants are natural products, variations in size, shape, and color will occur.
