Icelandic Lava Rock is a substantial volcanic hardscape stone with rugged textures, dark earthy colouring and impressive natural forms. Heavier and denser than typical lava rock, it is particularly well suited to creating bold, structural aquascapes with a strong sense of scale.
When dry, Icelandic Lava Rock displays predominantly charcoal, grey and earthy brown tones, with natural variations across its rugged volcanic surface.
Once wet, the colours become noticeably deeper and richer, revealing darker charcoal and brown-black tones while bringing out the rock's pits, crevices and irregular surface details.
Compared with conventional Black Lava Rock, Icelandic Lava Rock has a heavier, more substantial appearance and feel, giving larger pieces an impressive presence within an aquascape.
Icelandic Lava Rock is an excellent choice for creating large rock formations, dramatic mountains, cliffs, islands and rugged nature-style aquascapes.
One of its greatest advantages is the variety of natural sizes available. Pieces range from small and medium stones through to exceptionally large feature pieces, allowing an entire formation to be created using the same type of rock.
Large pieces can form the main structural focal point of an aquascape, while smaller stones can continue the formation into the surrounding substrate and create natural transitions.
Its weight can also be useful where a solid, stable hardscape foundation is required.
Icelandic Lava Rock works beautifully with natural wood, mosses, Bucephalandra, Anubias, ferns and lush green planting.
Its dark, earthy colouring can be contrasted with lighter sands for a dramatic landscape or combined with darker substrates for a more rugged, volcanic appearance.
For larger aquariums and shallow layouts, the oversized pieces can be particularly effective where a single impressive stone is needed to establish scale and direction.
