DESCRIPTION

Introduction:

Microsorum pteropus 'Narrow', commonly known as Narrow Leaf Java Fern, is a refined variation of the classic Java Fern, featuring long, slender leaves that give it a more delicate and flowing appearance. Native to Southeast Asia, this hardy, slow-growing plant is an excellent choice for midground or background placement in aquascapes. Like other Java Fern varieties, it is an epiphyte, meaning it thrives when attached to rocks, driftwood, or aquarium décor rather than being planted in the substrate. Its durability and adaptability make it a favorite among both beginner and experienced aquarists.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters: Prefers a temperature range of 20–28°C, with an optimal pH of 5.5–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water (3–15 dGH).
  • Nutrient Requirements: Absorbs nutrients from the water column, so regular liquid fertilization is beneficial. CO₂ supplementation is not necessary but can enhance growth.
  • Tank Setup: Thrives under low to moderate lighting, making it a great choice for low-tech setups. Best attached to hard surfaces like driftwood or rocks rather than buried in the substrate. Its long, narrow leaves add height and texture to aquascapes.

Care Tips:

To promote healthy growth, secure the plant to a surface using fishing line or aquarium-safe glue until it naturally anchors itself. Avoid burying the rhizome in the substrate, as this can cause rotting. Prune older leaves periodically to encourage fresh growth and maintain a tidy appearance.

Microsorum pteropus 'Narrow' is a fantastic choice for aquascapers looking for a hardy, low-maintenance plant with an elegant, flowing structure. Its long, thin leaves create a natural, dynamic effect in aquariums while providing shelter for fish and shrimp. Whether in a simple or complex aquascape, this plant offers beauty and functionality with minimal effort.
