Introduction:
Microsorum pteropus ‘Narrow Leaf’, a refined variant of the classic Java Fern, is a hardy, rhizomatous aquatic plant originating from Asia. This cultivar is characterised by long, slender fronds that create a graceful, flowing texture in the aquarium. Its narrow leaves provide a more delicate and elegant appearance compared to standard Java Fern, making it highly suitable for nature-style and wood-heavy aquascapes. Slow-growing and undemanding, this plant is ideal for aquarists of all skill levels, and its versatile form makes it an excellent midground to background accent.
Temperature: 20–28°C
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
Microsorum pteropus ‘Narrow Leaf’ is a low-maintenance plant that does not require CO₂ injection and thrives even in low-tech setups. While it takes nutrients primarily from the water column, moderate liquid fertilisation helps maintain strong, healthy fronds and prevents tip browning. Because it is a rhizomatous species, it should not be buried in substrate—root tabs are unnecessary, and attaching the plant to hardscape yields the best long-term results.
This fern grows to a height of 15–30+ cm, making it suitable for midground placement, driftwood mounting, or background layering in smaller aquariums. Low to moderate lighting is recommended; stronger lighting can be used but may require additional nutrients to avoid algae on the leaves. Secure the rhizome to rocks or wood using thread, glue, or gentle wedging—over time, the plant will naturally anchor itself. Gentle flow helps keep detritus off the leaves and prevents algae buildup.
Avoid burying the rhizome, as this can cause rot. Attach the plant to hardscape and allow its roots to grip naturally. Remove older or damaged fronds at the base to encourage fresh growth and maintain a tidy appearance. Tissue culture portions should be rinsed gently to remove the gel before planting or mounting. Because growth is slow, patience is key—once established, Microsorum ‘Narrow Leaf’ becomes a durable, long-lived feature in the aquascape.
Microsorum pteropus ‘Narrow Leaf’ brings elegance and fine texture to aquariums, offering a graceful form that contrasts beautifully against bushy stems and broad-leafed species. Thanks to its low light and low CO₂ requirements, it is a reliable, beginner-friendly plant that thrives in a wide range of setups and rewards aquarists with timeless, natural beauty.
