Shyadria denisonii, commonly known as the Redline Torpedo Barb or Roseline Shark, is one of the most striking freshwater schooling fish available to the aquarist. Native to the fast-flowing rivers and streams of Kerala, India, this beautifully marked barb combines an elegant torpedo-shaped body with vivid flashes of red, yellow and black.
Its most recognisable feature is the bright red stripe running from the nose across the upper half of the body, contrasted by a bold black lateral stripe. Mature fish develop additional yellow and red colouration towards the fins and tail, creating an exceptionally attractive display as a group moves through the aquarium.
Despite its common name of "Roseline Shark", Shyadria denisonii is not a true shark. It is a peaceful barb with an active, energetic nature and is best appreciated when kept in a group. A group will display much more natural schooling and social behaviour than a solitary fish.
Because these fish originate from flowing waters, they appreciate clean, well-oxygenated water and good circulation. They are active swimmers and should be provided with plenty of open swimming space, while plants, wood and rockwork can be used around the edges of the aquarium to create structure and security.
Shyadria denisonii is an omnivore and readily accepts quality flakes and pellets, as well as frozen and other suitable foods. A varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant colouration.
