Shrimp King Active Soil is available for pre-order – please confirm stock before ordering!
Dennerle Shrimp King Active Soil is a premium active substrate developed specifically for the successful keeping and breeding of freshwater shrimp that prefer soft, slightly acidic water.
Made from 100% natural raw materials, including carefully selected natural soils and fertile volcanic Andosol, Shrimp King Active Soil combines substrate, mineral supply and biological filtration in one.
Its active ion-exchange properties modify the aquarium water by lowering carbonate hardness and stabilising the pH in the slightly acidic range – creating conditions particularly well suited to sensitive soft-water shrimp.
Specially developed for shrimp keeping and breeding
Particularly suitable for Bee Shrimp and other soft-water Caridina
Made from 100% natural raw materials
Contains fertile volcanic Andosol
Actively creates soft, slightly acidic water
Helps stabilise pH at approximately 6.0–6.5
Can reduce carbonate hardness to approximately 0–2 °dKH, depending on the source water
Provides valuable minerals and trace elements
Natural source of humic and fulvic acids
Does not discolour the aquarium water
Highly porous structure provides an excellent surface for beneficial microorganisms
Provides a natural bio-filter function
Helps support healthy, clear aquarium water
Suitable as a complete aquarium substrate
Shrimp King Active Soil was specifically developed for shrimp species that naturally thrive in soft, slightly acidic water.
It is particularly suitable for Bee Shrimp varieties including:
Crystal Red
Red Bee
Tiger Bee
Shadow Shrimp
Other soft-water Caridina species
By actively influencing the water parameters, the soil helps create conditions closer to those these shrimp experience in their natural habitats.
Unlike an inert gravel or sand, Shrimp King Active Soil actively influences aquarium water chemistry.
Acting as a natural ion exchanger, it lowers and stabilises the pH at approximately:
pH 6.0–6.5
At the same time, it reduces carbonate hardness. Depending on the starting water, KH can be lowered to approximately:
0–2 °dKH
This makes Shrimp King Active Soil particularly valuable when creating specialised soft-water shrimp aquariums.
The soil contains natural Andosol, a highly fertile volcanic soil formed from mineral-rich volcanic material.
Andosol naturally contains valuable minerals and trace elements and is also a source of humic and fulvic acids.
These natural components help create a biologically favourable environment while supporting the health and growth of shrimp.
The porous structure of Shrimp King Active Soil provides a large surface area for colonisation by beneficial microorganisms.
These microorganisms form an important part of the aquarium's biological filtration system and contribute to stable, healthy water conditions.
The biofilm and microorganisms that develop throughout a mature shrimp aquarium are also particularly valuable to baby shrimp, which continually graze surfaces in search of microscopic food.
Add Shrimp King Active Soil unwashed directly to the dry aquarium.
Dennerle recommends a substrate depth of approximately:
3–5 cm
Once positioned, carefully fill the aquarium with water to avoid unnecessarily disturbing the substrate.
Do not rinse before use.
Because Shrimp King Active Soil actively lowers KH and pH, it is designed primarily for species requiring soft, slightly acidic water.
For specialised Caridina shrimp aquariums, the starting water and mineral composition are just as important as the substrate. Always select water parameters according to the requirements of the particular shrimp species being kept.

Dennerle Shrimp King Active Soil provides much more than an attractive substrate. By combining active water conditioning, natural volcanic soil, minerals, trace elements and biological filtration, it creates an excellent foundation for specialised soft-water shrimp aquariums.
